Chapter 202 Drinky Up

The medicine was intensely bitter, lacking any hint of sweetness. As it dispersed in Wen Yantong's mouth, she immediately scrunched up her face and pushed against Chi Jingxi's shoulder, struggling to expel the taste. However, Chi Jingxi seized both her wrists firmly and cradled the back of her head with his free hand, guiding her to swallow the medicine.

A slight trickle of brown liquid escaped from the corners of her mouth, traced down her slender neck, and gently traversed her moving throat.

Chi Jingxi sensed the feverish heat emanating from her. The points of contact between them sizzled with warmth, a sensation that surged from his fingertips all the way to the core of his heart.

Wen Yantong continued to struggle, twisting his wrist restlessly, trying to push him away. Chi Jingxi had no choice but to soften his strength and gently squeezed her wrist, gradually calming her restless mood.

After that initial mouthful of medicine, Wen Yantong furrowed her brows in displeasure, retreating under the blanket with a low groan. Naturally, Chi Jingxi wasn't about to indulge her. He captured her with one hand, then reached for the medicine bowl beside the bed and took another sip.

Seeing him persist, Wen Yantong began to wriggle about. Yet, she was completely immobilized by Chi Jingxi, unable to break free, and was compelled to take a second mouthful.

This pattern continued, and eventually Wen Yantong realized that her resistance was futile. Slowly, her struggles weakened, allowing Chi Jingxi to finish feeding her the entire bowl.

With the medicine bowl now empty, Chi Jingxi glanced at the residue stains at bottom before turning his attention to Wen Yantong. He leaned over and planted a gentle kiss on her lips, as if rewarding her for taking the bitter medicine.

Wen Yantong weakly pushed his face away. "I'm suffering from bitterness."

Chi Jingxi used his soft fingertip to wipe away the liquid that had trickled down her neck. "I was in a hurry this time and didn't prepare any candied fruit. It won’t happen next time."

Wen Yantong shot him a glare. "Are you hoping I get sick again?"

Chi Jingxi paused, then with a tender smile, he corrected himself, "Alright, there won't be a next time."

Wen Yantong let out a dramatic sigh, sinking back into the bed. She covered her head and complained, "You promised the medicine would make my head stop hurting, but now it's pounding even worse! You lied!"

Chi Jingxi gently ran his fingers through her hair, soothingly. "Just give it a little time. After a nap, you'll feel much better, I promise."

Wen Yantong closed her eyes, surrendering to the comfort of his touch.

Seeing her starting to doze off, Chi Jingxi got up and had a servant prepare a pot of hot water. He placed it on the nearby table and then gently coaxed Wen Yantong to sit up on the bed.

Wen Yantong felt drained of energy, and discomfort lingered, accompanied by the bitter taste in her mouth. She swayed slightly as she sat.

Chi Jingxi was remarkably patient. He wrung out the water from a towel, took a seat at the bedside, gently straightened her posture, and allowed her to rest against his shoulder. With care, he began to wipe her face.

Despite his lack of experience in tending to others, the Little Marquis displayed a surprising dexterity. He was cautious, fearful of inadvertently causing any discomfort to Wen Yantong's delicate skin.

The warm water against her skin stirred Wen Yantong from her daze. She blinked, her large eyes gazing up at him with a gentle haze.

Chi Jingxi's movements were deliberate and thorough. He wiped her face, then her neck, making sure to attend to every detail. Wen Yantong's eyes followed his every motion.

With care, he tended to her hands, ensuring they were immaculately clean, from her wrists down to the tips of her fingers. She watched him for a moment, then turned her gaze to her own hands.

Once he was finished, Chi Jingxi instructed a servant to clear away the basin and bring two padded blankets to place beside the bed.

Gently, he guided Wen Yantong into bed, tucking her in with the blankets. He then lightly patted her forehead. "Rest now."

Chi Jingxi could see Wen Yantong's struggle to keep her eyes open. Even though sleep was tugging at her, she resisted closing them and fixed her gaze on him, unblinking.

He carefully looked around the room, then selected a book from the table. Taking a short stool, he positioned himself to be at the same eye level as Wen Yantong, who was resting on the bed. His voice was gentle yet reassuring, "You can rest now. I'll be right here."

Wen Yantong, comforted by his words, shifted her body to face him. Her eyes, now heavy with sleep, began to close slightly, indicating her drowsiness.

Chi Jingxi opened the book and looked at it seriously under the warm light beside the bed.

The memory of her time at the Academy resurfaced, the nightmarish moments when she'd wake up sobbing. Just like then, Chi Jingxi was here now, not uttering a word of comfort, yet his presence was a soothing balm.

The night was enveloped in darkness, punctuated only by the soft flicker of candlelight and the gentle rustle of pages turning.

Chi Jingxi's breath barely stirred the air, but its presence carried a reassuring weight, settling Wen Yantong's heart, ushering in a sense of calm and tranquility. As the servants hastened to prepare a guest room, Chi Jingxi remained seated until the late hours, ensuring Wen Yantong was completely at ease in her slumber before departing to find his own rest in the newly prepared quarters.

After Mu Yang and Fu Zixian were expelled from Wen Residence by Chi Jingxi, the two sat in the carriage, a heavy silence between them.

Mu Yang's expression was dark, clearly in a foul mood.

Fu Zixian, typically reserved in conversation, observed Mu Yang's discontent. He recognized that Mu Yang had been weighed down by worry these past few days, evident from the fatigue etched on his face.

Seeking to divert Mu Yang's attention, Fu Zixian ventured, "Young Master Mu, what courtesy name did General Mu bestow upon you?"

Mu Yang snapped back to attention at Fu Zixian's question. When he looked up, the weight on his brows seemed to lift a bit, and he replied, "Xingyi. 'Xing' signifies carrying out tasks proficiently ('行事xíng-shi'), while 'Yi' represents standing tall and firm ('屹立yì-lì')."

"Mu Xingyi," Fu Zixian repeated the name, then offered a warm smile. "General Mu is quite cultured."

Mu Yang responded with a slight pout, "Half of the credit goes to your father."

After a brief pause, Fu Zixian seemed to gather his resolve and retrieved a jade pendant from his sleeve pocket. He spoke, a touch of regret in his voice, "I was delayed these past two days, so I couldn't wish Xingyi a happy birthday on time. I'm sorry."

Mu Yang, initially unaware of the pendant, waved it off dismissively. "What's there to apologize for? You were kidnapped. If anyone deserves blame, it's the remnants of the Jiang Residence for subjecting you to this unjust ordeal."

Fu Zixian raised his hands helplessly. "I don't have anything valuable to offer..."

Mu Yang let out an extended sigh, seeming to be lost in his thoughts. Abruptly, he drew open the curtains to peer outside. "It’s fine. I wasn’t expecting anything from you. It's the sentiment that counts. Unlike Wen Yantong, who came up with all sorts of excuses to avoid attending my birthday party. But now that he's fallen ill, I find myself genuinely concerned for his well-being."

Fu Zixian reassured him, "Don't worry too much. It seems like a simple case of catching a chill, just an ordinary cold."

Observing the road, Mu Yang estimated that the Prime Minister's Residence was only two blocks away, so he said to the attendant outside and ordered, "Head to Xinqi Street. I'd like to buy some pastries to eat."

The attendant hesitated for a moment. "Should we first take Young Master Fu back, and then proceed to buy the pastries, or..."

Mu Yang interrupted, "Let's go straight to buy the pastries, and then head directly to the General's Mansion."

The attendant nodded, acknowledging the instruction, and lowered his head. By the time Mu Yang turned his attention back to Fu Zixian, his hands had been extended for quite some time.

Curious, Mu Yang looked at the pendant. "What's this?"

Fu Zixian's hand was a little sore, so he placed the jade pendant directly into Mu Yang’s hand. He said, "This is a jade pendant from the Wei Residence in Chuanyang. It's a birthday gift for you. It's not much, but I hope you won't mind."

Mu Yang's eyes widened in astonishment, and he quickly passed out onto the soft couch in the carriage.
