Chapter 201 Medicine: To Consume or Not

Jiang Yan stayed silent. While he didn't want to go to such extremes, he felt that there was no other option if he stayed in Chaoge. The city gates were heavily guarded, and people were thoroughly inspected when entering or leaving. He had disguised himself as a woman in a desperate attempt to leave Chaoge, but fate had led him into the hands of Chi Jingxi and the others.

But Yibei was so far away. It was an unfamiliar place, and he knew nothing about it. Surviving there would be a tremendous challenge.

"What about somewhere... a bit closer?" Jiang Yan gathered his courage to negotiate.

Cheng Xin reassured him, "Don't worry, I'll make arrangements for you in Yibei. You'll have a place to stay, and we'll provide you with food and clothing. If you encounter any difficulties, just send a letter, and I'll do my best to assist you."

There was a glimmer of surprise in Jiang Yan's eyes. "You're serious?"

Cheng Xin nodded firmly. "Everything I say, I mean."

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Jiang Yan exclaimed, "Thank you, Your Fifth Highness, for sparing my life."

Cheng Xin's gaze held a touch of pitch as he looked at Jiang Yan.

After their meeting that night, Jiang Yan was swiftly set on the path to Yibei. He left Chaoge City, the place he'd called home for over a decade, with nothing to his name.

Wen Yantong was deeply shaken by this turn of events. She had descended from the mountain all through the night, and on her way back, she developed a high fever. When they arrived back at the Wen Residence, both Mu Yang and Fu Zixian were deeply worried, reluctant to leave her side.

Chi Jingxi didn't waste a moment. He swiftly carried Wen Yantong from the gate straight into the bedroom in the backyard, instructing Mu Yang and Fu Zixian to leave.

Mu Yang had scarcely slept since hearing about Wen Yantong and Fu Zixian's kidnapping. His eyes were bloodshot, resembling those of a startled rabbit.

Fu Zixian, too, looked frail, as if about to collapse at any moment.

Chi Jingxi assured Wen Yantong that he would personally oversee her care and forcibly ordered the two of them to go back to rest in their respective houses.

After the doctor's examination, it was determined that Wen Yantong was suffering from a common fever due to exposure to the cold wind. The prescribed medicine and some rest would suffice to bring down her temperature.

Since Chi Jingxi took charge of the Wen Residence last year and organized the household staff, he had established himself as the rightful master of the estate. When it was only Wen Yantong present, the servants often lacked discipline and structure. However, with Chi Jingxi's presence, they no longer dared to display any unruly behavior. They kept their emotions in check, avoided raising their heads insolently, and always maintained a posture of perfect attentiveness. They knew better than to incur Chi Jingxi's displeasure.

Under Chi Jingxi's watchful eye, the servants worked with increased efficiency, afraid to be anything less than swift and precise in carrying out his orders.

Thus, the only individuals more invested in Wen Yantong's recovery than Chi Jingxi were the servants of Wen Residence.

Wen Yantong's fever made her feel miserable, her body aching all over, and a throbbing pain pulsating in her head.

After changing into fresh clothes, Chi Jingxi, still with damp hair, approached Wen Yantong's bedside holding a bowl. Observing her closed eyes and pained expression, a surge of concern washed over him.

Squatting by the bed, he gently brushed the back of his hand against Wen Yantong's cheek. It was alarmingly hot.

"Tongtong..." Chi Jingxi murmured softly.

At the sound of his voice, Wen Yantong slowly opened her eyes. She hadn't really been asleep; she was simply lost in her discomfort, drifting in and out of consciousness.

Two lamps cast a warm, yellow glow in the room, highlighting the handsome silhouette of Chi Jingxi.

Wen Yantong's voice was hoarse, "Did you call me?"

Chi Jingxi nodded gently, "Get up and drink the medicine. You'll feel better after taking it."

"It's been a while... since someone called me Tongtong," Wen Yantong remarked, looking at him.

Chi Jingxi gazed back at her with tenderness, "Your father called you that the last time."

"Oh, yes," Wen Yantong suddenly remembered, pausing before admitting, "I forgot."

Chi Jingxi spoke in a gentle tone, "Your fever is affecting your clarity of mind. Sit up and drink the medicine."

With Chi Jingxi's support, Wen Yantong managed to sit up. She accepted the medicine bowl from him, hesitated for a moment, and asked earnestly, "Can I skip it?"

Seeing that her speech was affected by the fever, Chi Jingxi replied in a serious tone, "If you don't, your piggy brain might get fried."

Wen Yantong considered this for a moment and then nodded in agreement, saying, "You're probably right."

After a brief pause, she added, "But I really don't want to drink it."

Wen Yantong stared at Chi Jingxi, her eyes wide open, showing no intention of taking the medicine.

Chi Jingxi approached and asked, "Does your head hurt?"

Wen Yantong touched her head and nodded blankly.

Chi Jingxi tried to coax her, "After you drink it, your head won't hurt."

He extended the medicine bowl towards her, but she still seemed unwilling to take it.

Chi Jingxi, feeling a bit helpless, set the medicine bowl aside. He proposed, "Let's play a little game. If you lose, you have to drink up the bowl of medicine."

Wen Yantong, curious, asked, "What if you lose?"

"Then I'll drink this medicine for you," he replied.

Wen Yantong readily agreed, nodding. "Okay, what game?"

Chi Jingxi then proposed, "If twenty-four eggs are placed on the table, you and I take turns to take them. We can take up to five and at least one at a time. The person who takes the last egg on the table is the winner."

Wen Yantong blinked, pondering over the rules of the game. After a moment, Chi Jingxi asked, "Do you understand?"

Wen Yantong nodded promptly, "Of course."

"Then you start first," he suggested.

Wen Yantong leaned against the bed frame, considered for a moment, and said, "I'll take three."

Chi Jingxi said, "Then I'll take three."

Wen Yantong inwardly counted, "I'll take five more."

"I'll take one." Chi Jingxi said.

Wen Yantong: "Four."

Chi Jingxi: "I'll take two."

Wen Yantong: "Five."

Chi Jingxi: "One. The last egg was taken away by me, you lose."

Wen Yantong was momentarily stunned. "How did that happen?"

Upon recounting the eggs she had chosen, she discovered that Chi Jingxi had taken the last one, which meant she had lost.

Observing her realization, Chi Jingxi extended the medicine bowl. "You made a bet, now it's time to pay up. Drink it before it gets too cold."

Wen Yantong, still unwilling to accept the outcome, curled her lips in protest. "You were cheating."

Chi Jingxi raised an eyebrow in mock surprise. "Me? You're the one who was tempted to cheat. Remember your promise? If you lost, you'd take the medicine."

Wen Yantong turned her head away and firmly declared, "I won't drink it."

Chi Jingxi let out a resigned sigh. "If you persist like this, don't be surprised if I have to resort to more assertive methods."

In her mind, Wen Yantong thought, ‘Is he really going to force it down my throat?’ She clenched her lips, and continued to shake her head resolutely.

A playful gleam danced in Chi Jingxi's eyes. Swiftly, he lifted the bowl, taking a generous sip of the medicine, then gently placed it aside.

Sensing his intent, Wen Yantong swiftly moved further into the bed, but before she could get far, Chi Jingxi was beside her. Kneeling on one knee, he gripped her ankle, deftly pulling her back towards him.

The heat emanating from Wen Yantong's body was almost feverishly hot. She instinctively attempted to break free from his grasp, but Chi Jingxi's swift movements left her no chance. In an instant, she found herself ensnared in his arms.

Then, his lips descended. Gently, he coaxed open Wen Yantong's mouth with his own, administering the medicine bit by bit.
