Chapter 239 Chi Jingxi beneath the Ginkgo Tree

After walking for a while, the entire team found themselves deep within the mountains, the only sounds being those of the wind and the hooves of their horses.

Mu Yang had been silent throughout the journey, but then he abruptly asked, "Do you think there are wild beasts in these mountains?"

Wen Yantong was taken aback and turned to him, "What kind of talk is that?"

Fu Zixian responded in a solemn tone, "It's difficult to ascertain. These mountains are rugged and isolated. Very few individuals traverse them regularly. Only hunters and woodcutters may sporadically roam the area. The pristine condition of the Sister Mountains is probably due to the presence of wild animals, which discourages casual exploration."

Wen Yantong expressed her apprehension, "We've already made it quite far in..."

She hadn't taken into account the potential dangers. If they encountered wild wolves or tigers, they could become lost in the dense mountains before locating Chi Jingxi, and their lives might be at risk.

Fu Zixian reassured, "Let's remain calm. We'll proceed quietly to avoid alerting any wild beasts. Additionally, we've brought sharp weapons. If we do encounter them, we stand a chance of prevailing."

Wen Yantong's momentary relief was shattered by a low roar echoing from the dark forest, sending shivers down her spine. The horses, spooked by the ominous sound, came to an abrupt stop, their fear palpable in the stillness of the night.

Fu Zixian's commanding voice cut through the tense atmosphere, "Halt the procession and assemble!"

Hastily, the group converged, but the horses, agitated by the eerie sound, grew increasingly unruly. Their panicked cries shattered the tranquil night, adding to the sense of unease permeating the mountains.

In a panic, Wen Yantong struggled to rein in her horse, unsure of what course of action to take. Glancing around, she saw Fu Zixian's stern expression as he stared intently in the direction of the roar, while Mu Yang positioned his horse closer to hers.

Wen Yantong's mount wasn't accustomed to the chaos of battle; it grew increasingly unsettled after the menacing roar. With pitiful whinnies, it began to prance nervously, its hooves striking the ground in agitation. Despite Wen Yantong's efforts to calm it, the horse's distress only escalated, culminating in violent jerks and attempts to unseat her.

As Mu Yang observed Wen Yantong's horse's agitation, he swiftly extended his hand towards her, offering assistance. "Quickly, hop onto my horse!" he urged.

Letting go one hand from the reins, Wen Yantong reached out to grasp Mu Yang's hand during the horse's erratic movements, but the horse's restlessness made it difficult for her to maintain her grip.

In that fleeting moment of contact, a deafening roar erupted from the forest, jolting Wen Yantong to her core, causing her to tremble uncontrollably.

Her horse, consumed by fear, bucked wildly and bolted. With a desperate cry, it galloped away erratically. Wen Yantong's hand barely brushed against Mu Yang's before she was violently torn from his grasp and hurled a considerable distance by the force of her horse's frantic movements.

"Wen Yantong!" Mu Yang's voice echoed, his instinct driving him to urge his horse to give chase. However, the forest reverberated with menacing roars, causing the horses to balk at moving further, instead huddling closer to one another in fear.

Fu Zixian found himself compelled to halt Mu Yang in his tracks, asserting, "Her mount is a Thoroughbred. Neither our horses or the beast can overtake it. First, we must devise a plan to disperse these creatures before pursuing her."

Mu Yang's eyes welled with concern, his voice betraying his unease, "But it’s dangerous to let her be alone in the forest!"

"Insofar as her horse can still run, she remains out of harm's way," Fu Zixian stated calmly. "It's us who are presently in jeopardy. Rushing after her recklessly will only leave you isolated."

Mu Yang clenched his teeth in frustration, though he knew he had little recourse.

Fu Zixian steadied Mu Yang before commanding, "Prepare the torches and ready your bows!"

On the other side, the frightened horse raced swiftly and relentlessly, carrying Wen Yantong for what seemed like an eternity. When the horse finally came to a halt, the wind had whipped Wen Yantong's face to the point of numbness.

Feeling dizzy and slightly queasy, she surveyed her surroundings, but the darkness enveloped her entirely. The moon was obscured by clouds, offering no illumination to guide Wen Yantong's sight.

Wen Yantong was as terrified as the horse itself. Although she had the impulse to slap the horse’s face, she hesitated, realizing that any sudden movement might spook it, leaving her stranded and vulnerable.

As the horse paused to catch its breath, Wen Yantong remained in the saddle, vigilant. She scanned her surroundings, attuned to every sound and movement, prepared to flee at the first sign of danger.

But the surroundings were eerily quiet, the wind tapering off to a gentle breeze, and not a sound broke the silence.

After a moment of waiting, the moon emerged from behind the thick clouds, casting its silver light upon the landscape, instantly brightening the surroundings.

She spotted a mountain cloaked in yellow not far ahead, its hue accentuated by the silver moonlight, standing out prominently amidst the green terrain.

Her heart leaped with joy. She hadn't anticipated the horse's wild gallop leading her to the outskirts of Older Sister Mountain.

She longed to embrace the horse and shower it with gratitude. This stroke of fortune amidst peril was truly remarkable.

Wen Yantong hastened towards the mountain. She knew that if Chi Jingxi was within its confines, his soldiers would undoubtedly scour the area, making her detection imminent upon entry.

Her foresight proved accurate. Shortly after venturing into the mountain, she was quickly spotted. However, given her lack of a military steed and her gender, she was perceived as a spy dispatched by the enemy and was placed under close surveillance.

As she trembled along, a net suddenly plummeted from the sky, ensnaring her entirely. In an instant, she was lifted off the ground as the net tightened around her.

"Have mercy, I mean no hard!" she cried out desperately.

Yet, her plea fell on deaf ears, the figures around her remaining concealed. Suspended in the air, Wen Yantong found herself unable to catch even a glimpse of her captors.

"You're loyal to the Little Marquis, aren't you? I'm a friend of his, here to seek him out!" she pleaded. "Please, lower me down. We're all on the same side!"

"How do we know we can trust you?" someone inquired skeptically.

"Bring me to the Little Marquis!" Wen Yantong demanded, her voice echoing loudly.

The surroundings fell into a hushed deliberation. Eventually, a decision was reached. "Behave yourself. We'll seek guidance from the Commander-in-Chief."

Wen Yantong complied without hesitation. If it weren't for being suspended in the net, she would have likely remained composed, perhaps even meditating quietly.

Being trapped in the net was undeniably uncomfortable. Thankfully, the ordeal didn't last long. Before long, a man arrived and swiftly released her. After being lowered to the ground, Wen Yantong landed with a thud on her backside.

Rubbing her sore waist, she rose to her feet, only then did the shadowy figures emerge from the darkness.

Despite being freed, they still kept their weapons trained on her. "Come with us, no funny business," they warned sternly.

Wen Yantong nodded eagerly, her expression innocent and compliant.

As they ascended the mountain, the number of soldiers increased, each casting wary glances in her direction. Wen Yantong clenched a handful of disheveled hair, her scalp tingling from the scrutiny. Nevertheless, she endured it stoically until they reached the central area where the team was stationed.

In the distance, a campfire blazed brightly, illuminating a figure seated beside it while others stood nearby. Wen Yantong's gaze was drawn to the seated individual, a strong intuition telling her it was Chi Jingxi.

As she drew nearer, his silhouette sharpened, and tears welled up in Wen Yantong's eyes. From Chaoge to Yibei, she had traversed countless mountains and rivers for this moment.

Chi Jingxi sat draped in a yellow robe, one leg casually bent, leaning against a tree. Before him, a roaring fire cast a golden hue upon his handsome features. His expression remained serene, as placid as ever.

Amidst the canopy of ginkgo leaves, he resembled the most exquisite ginkgo leaf herself had ever seen—a perfect match to the image etched in her mind.

She trailed behind them to the edge of the campfire, her gaze unwaveringly fixed on Chi Jingxi. Despite being within arm's reach, close enough for him to hear her slightest whisper, she hesitated to disrupt his reverie.

"Commander-in-Chief," a voice broke the silence, "I've brought her."

The interruption stirred Chi Jingxi from his thoughts. Slowly, he lifted his gaze from the flickering flames, turning to meet her eyes.

The tranquil gaze transformed into a whirlpool of emotion, surprise replacing the calmness. The instant Chi Jingxi laid eyes on her, it was as if a floodgate had opened, releasing a torrent of feelings concealed within his gaze.

Wen Yantong couldn't suppress the curve of her lips as a smile broke through, yet her nose tingled, and tears welled up inexplicably, streaming down her cheeks.

She watched as Chi Jingxi rose to his feet, his expression a mix of astonishment and disbelief.

"Little Marquis," she uttered softly, "I've come to find you."

The author has something to say:  I goofed up. I went with "Sister Mountains" for convenience, but it got a bit muddled as I wrote along.

I've straightened things out in the previous chapters, but if there are any lingering mistakes, please let me know! o(╥﹏╥)o
