Chapter 20: Little Bean Sprout

Jin Zhifeng found Lin Xiaocha’s fear of being seen as short by others quite adorable.

So he decided to tease her more.

He turned around and cast a random spell on his hand. A golden star  magically appeared on his palm  before quickly disappearing.

While Lin Xiaocha was looking at him seriously, Jin Zhi Feng approached her and patted her head with the bewitched hand.

Startled, the little girl anxiously moved away and touched where he just patted. Vigilantly staring at him with her round apricot eyes, she asked, "What are you doing?"

"I casted a spell unique to the Jin Family." He said–holding her head once again, this time with both hands and grinned, "Little bean sprout, don't  even think about growing taller anymore. You are stunted now."

Looking at her figure, she must be around fifteen or sixteen years old. Theoretically, she should be able to grow a few more inches with proper care, Jin Zhifeng thought.

"You, you, you..." Lin Xiaocha stuttered, looking at him incredulously.

Jin Zhifeng watched the little bean sprout stammering as if she had lost her tongue.

And couldn’t help feeling happy.

He raised his eyebrows and proudly asked, "What's wrong?"

Jin Zhifeng relished his accomplishment of leaving the little girl speechless, but when he noticed her misty eyes, and tears welling up in them by the second; the pride in his heart vanished.

He quickly let go of the back of her head.

"What's the matter?"

As soon as his words fell, Lin Xiaocha collapsed on the table and began to cry uncontrollably.

She didn't cry in a loud voice, but her distressful sobs, and sad whimpering filled the room.

Jin Zhifeng was most afraid of crying women, so he panicked and desperately tried to console her.

"Hey, please stop crying?"

"Don't cry, okay?"

"Unbelievable, what are you even crying for?"

"Is it because I said you wouldn’t grow taller?"

Jin Zhifeng's heart was deeply affected by her tearful expression.

"Are you stupid? How could there be a spell in the world that makes people stop growing?"

Despite his words, the little girl still did not raise her head.

Jin Zhifeng let out a long sigh.

He couldn’t help but acknowledge that he brought this upon himself.

The Young City Lord of Jinjue City, a dignified ‘seven foot man[1]’, actually made a little girl cry. If word got out, he would be the one who would be losing face.

Forget it. A man should be able to stand tall or bend when it’s required.

He squatted down in front of her. "Hey, please don't cry. I was just teasing you."

"How can I make you stop crying?" he pleaded.

Lin Xiaocha still did not answer, and kept on sobbing.

He felt his heart twisting at the sight of her and let out another sigh.

Finally, he gritted his teeth and said the necessary words, "I'm sorry."

This was not easy for him, the young master of Jinjue City, to say.

Immediately after, the girl next to him finally lifted her head, a sly smile on her lips.

More importantly, there were no traces of tears on her face.

! ! !

Jin Zhifeng was stunned.

He immediately reacted, asking, "You lied to me?" His heart was leaping as if he were riding on a roller coaster.

Lin Xiaocha blinked, and shot back, "You lied to me first," before sticking her tongue out at him.

When Jin Zhifeng saw her plump lips and the pink and tender tongue, his heart almost jumped out of his throat.

And while he was having an existential crisis, the culprit just got up and was preparing to leave.

He stood up from the ground, grabbed her thin wrists and pulled her back to him.

Lin Xiaocha let out a surprised gasp, almost bumping her head onto his chin.

Jin Zhifeng looked at the girl trapped in his arms, her slender eyelashes trembled in  panic, and her small mouth was tightly closed.

He smelled a unique scent emanating from her body, akin to the aroma of tea. He didn’t realize it before but now that they were standing in such close proximity, the fragrance was even more refreshing.

His heart throbbed again.

"You are so courageous, you even dare to toy with me?" He growled in a low voice, and stared at her with dark eyes.

Lin Xiaocha looked like she couldn't even speak because of how nervous she was. Her little mouth opened and closed without making any sound.

She tried to free her wrists from his shackles, but was unable to with the little strength she had

Just as the two reached an impasse, Han Yu came out of his room and coldly stared down at Jin Zhifeng from the second floor.

Jin Zhifeng instantly felt the temperature shift in the room and looked up. He immediately saw the man in white who was condescendingly looking at him.

The cold moonlight-like-aura coming from him clashed with the warm morning light.

Like a white statue, he just stood there quietly, making people feel incapable of profanity and disobedience.

His eyes were chilly and sharp; his whole body exuded strong displeasure towards the scene he witnessed.

The entire inn was instantly enveloped with a layer of invisible coercion, which made anyone near breathless.

Jin Zhifeng reflexively released Lin Xiaocha's hand.

And Lin Xiaocha hurriedly took a few steps back, her face burning red.

It was only then that Jin Zhifeng began to reflect on his actions. He couldn't explain what was happening to him since these people arrived at the inn. He didn't know what was wrong with him, it was as if he had been possessed.

Since yesterday, after meeting this little girl, he had been experiencing frequent and heavy heart flutters.

On the other hand, Lin Xiaocha seemed to only discover Han Yu standing on the second floor, "Xianjun, did you just wake up? Did we bother you?"

Han Yu didn't answer. His expression worsened when he realized there were red marks on her wrists. He moved his glazed eyes back to Jin Zhifeng's face.

And the suffocating feeling hit Jin Zhifeng once again.

When they first came inside the inn, the youth felt that these two people were a bit familiar, as if he had seen them somewhere prior.

While he was thinking about the subject, a memory of two people riding on a horse towards the Ten Thousand Demon Forest last night came up to him. He remembered laughing at them, and jokingly scoffed to his sister that anyone who could ride a horse dared to enter Demonic Forest these days.

Judging by their transportation, he thought that Han Yu was merely a weakling with no flying weapon and extremely weak spiritual power. But how can he give off such a suffocating aura?

The man's eyes made Jin Zhifeng very uneasy, and Lin Xiaocha's calling him 'Xianjun' made that feeling grow exponentially.

Jin Zhifeng sneered, glanced at Han Yu and mocked, "Xianjun? Can any random person be called like this nowadays?"

Han Yu's thin lips pursed tightly; he didn't say a word but just stared at the boy as if he wanted to freeze him to death right where he was standing.

The atmosphere in the whole inn became even worse than before.

Lin Xiaocha could even see the electricity sparking between the two.

She didn’t pipe a word, sensing that right now wasn’t the ideal moment to make any statement.

While she would ultimately take the male protagonist’s side whenever necessary, she hoped to defuse the situation and persuade Jin Zhifeng to back down.

"Xianjun is my savior. You can say whatever you want about me, but don't speak ill of him." she finally spoke up.

The bond between a savior and the rescued individual didn’t have to be defined by gender and romance. There was no need for their relationship to be one of men and women.

She literally just hinted to Jin Zhifeng that she had to take Han Yu’s side because she was indebted to him, not because there was something romantic going on.

Jin Zhifeng was taken aback for a moment.

Her savior...

So that is how it was.

Looking at her serious expression, and her pair of watery eyes, it seemed as if she would burst into tears at any moment.

He didn’t want to see her cry, even though she might just be pretending to.

Therefore, he decided to put the matter aside, and headed towards the stairs leading to his room.

After walking a few steps, he turned his head and advised Lin Xiaocha, "Hey, little bean sprout, If you want to grow taller, eat more."

Simultaneously, as Han Yu gracefully descended the narrow stairs, the two men nearly collided as they passed each other.

Jin Zhifeng turned his head and glanced at the man in white.

The closer he got to him, the more he felt that his aura was strong and arrogant.

As the Young City Lord of Jinjue City, even the Empress had to act courteously towards him. But this man didn't seem to put him in his eyes at all; Han Yu acted like he even disdained to look at him.

Since Jin Zhifeng was not a narrow-minded person and presently too lazy to care, he just unhappily returned to his room.

Han Yu walked to the opposite side of Lin Xiaocha’s table and sat down, waiting for the boss to serve the best tea he had.

Dazed, Lin Xiaocha lay on the table and gazed into the distance.

Han Yu glanced at her wrist faintly. It was probably held too strongly by this Jin Zhifeng to leave red marks like this.

He lowered his eyes and took a sip of his hot tea, and then put the teacup down calmly.

Feng Ziying, General Zuo, Jin Zhifeng; in just a few days after meeting the little girl, these men kept provoking her.

Well, it was true that even those fairies with beautiful faces and bewitching demons were not as attractive as this refugee.

What he hadn’t realized was that while contemplating this matter, his own expression had turned a fringe colder.

Meanwhile, the little girl lying on the table raised her eyes and looked at him with a sad look, as if she was clueless to Han Yu's displeasure.

"Xianjun, do you think I am short?" She asked listlessly.

Han Yu has never cared whether a person was short or not.

However, she had asked him about it, but he did not know how to answer.

Moreover, because she was sprawled on the table right now, he couldn't see her height.

So he had to go through his memories of her to remember how tall she was.

Rather than calling her short, it would be more appropriate to say that she was petite and exquisite. He remembered the night she slept beside him; he thought he would accidentally squeeze and break her.

Thinking about this, his Adam's apple nervously bobbed, and his grip on the teacup tightened.

He lowered his eyes and took another sip of burning tea to calm his heart rate down.

He lightly stated, "Not short."

Lin Xiaocha immediately smiled, "Xianjun, you are such a good person. Nüwa[2] must have been very careful when she made you."

Han Yu: "What?"

Lin Xiaocha looked at him. "You have such gorgeous features. Your eyebrows look good, your eyes, nose, and mouth are perfectly made; your entire face is a work of art. You are beautiful from the top of your head to your heel. Every aspect of you is stunning. Even your hair carries an immortal aura," she explained with great enthusiasm.

"The legend says that when Nüwa made human beings, the first batch was specifically pinched by her hand. Later, she was too tired to continue shaping us one by one, so she dipped a rope with mud and threw it out. From it came out the less attractive people who populate the earth. I must be from the batch that was thrown out, and you definitely are the most exquisitely made from the batch that was pinched the most carefully by her hands."

Han Yu: ...

Lin Xiaocha looked a little depressed after saying all this and sighed heavily, "I envy you so much. You are tall and beautiful, unlike me..."

Han Yu’s expression instantly softened. Although still in her youth, the girl in front of him was already extremely beautiful. However, for him to verbally praise another for their beauty, would be impossible.

Since he wasn’t very good with words, he just said, "You are still young, you still have time to grow up."

The little girl's eyes lit up. She rose from the table and earnestly asked, "Will I grow taller?"

"Yes."

At his answer, Lin Xiaocha stood up excitedly. "Then let us compare and see where my height is currently? Can I really grow taller in the future?"

Footnote:

[1] ‘seven foot man’ (七男儿) - is a term referring to adult men in the Spring and Autumn (770 to 481 BCE) and Warring States Periods (475–221 BCE). From the Warring States period to the Qin and Han Dynasties, the length of one chinese foot () is about 23.1cm, so seven chinese feet is about 1.61 meters.

[2] Nüwa - In Chinese mythology, Nüwa (女媧) is considered to be the first being with the ability to procreate and is the creator of all mankind. Ancient Chinese society was fiercely matriarchal, so Nüwa, being the mother of all humans, was considered a very important deity. Nüwa created humanity due to her loneliness, which grew more intense over time. She molded yellow earth or, in other versions, yellow clay into the shape of people. These individuals later became the wealthy nobles of society, because they had been created by Nüwa's own hands. However, the majority of humanity was created when Nüwa dragged strings across mud to mass-produce them, which she did because creating every person by hand was too time- and energy-consuming.
